Gimme! Gimme! In a world filled with commercials for the latest toys and technology, how do you teach your kid about giving? Charity is important whether it is time or money. Here is how I teach my daughter about giving; I hope it will spark some ideas for you and your family.
Give Away Their Own Belongings
One way I teach my kid about giving is to give away her own stuff. Twice a year, birthday and Christmas, I have her decide what toys she wants to give away to other kids. I must admit, this helps clear space in her room for the upcoming gift giving occasions. When gathering her own toys, she gets excited and hopes the other kids will like her gifts to them. Since everything is her decision, the only thing I have to do is be the chauffeur to the nearest Goodwill.
Give 10% of Allowance
Another ways I teach my kid about giving is showing her how to set aside some of her allowance for tithes and offerings. To know more about how she earns her allowance, read this post. Since my daughter is only 5 years old, she does not know what 10% is but she knows that she must put money aside to give away. She gets excited to drop money into the receiving basket at church.
Random Acts of Kindness
The last way I teach my kid about giving is displaying random acts of kindness. This means to give time instead of money. Our random acts include letting someone go ahead of us in line, holding the door open for people, bringing extra supplies to school for those who need it, and more. I plan on doing more volunteer work with my daughter now that she is getting older. It is important to learn that giving time is just as important, if not more, than giving money.
Giving is a part of everyday life. I want my kid to get enjoyment from giving and build character. Besides, parenting is not easy so let’s help each other. How do you teach your kids about giving?
